Te Tauomo

(Known also as Purchas Hill)

A small remnant of Te Tauomo Volcano remains within the debris of the old quarry site, in a position just north of Homestead Drive and to the west of Morrin Road in Mt Wellington.

Te Tauomo

Te Tauomo was a small double volcano and the remnant appears to be the portion that would have been situated between the two hills resulting from the volcanic events.

The surrounding tuff ring is entirely destroyed, but to the northeast, the approximate location of the tuff ring is indicated by the alignment of Elizabeth Knox Place. To the south, the approximate location of the tuff ring is indicated by the alignment of Homestead Drive.

The photos above, taken about mid-2006, show a somewhat indistinct outline of the remnant. To the left is a normal view and to the right, the same, with telephoto applied. Both photos were taken from the road through the wire mesh fence, from the northeast.

The remnant is rather more distinct as shown in this photograph from the south.

A further photograph (below left) shows the remnant at right centre and centre, taken in September 2006 from the public carparking area on nearby Maungarei/Mt Wellington. Below (right) taken from the east, shows the ex-Quarry valley floor under preliminary development. Te Tauomo is in the centre background.

Munroe Graham instigated the volcanic landform protection sub committee of Civic Trust Auckland during his efforts to help save this volcanic remnant in 2006. In late 2006 it was learned that following submissions from this sub committee and many others, including active intervention by Mayor Dick Hubbard, a small reserve including the remnant is to be created.
