The historic Onehunga station was originally located in lower Onehunga, on the south east corner of Princes Street with Queen Street (now Onehunga Mall) handy at that time to the town centre, tramway and wharf.
It was built when the Auckland to Onehunga railway was completed in 1873 and moved to the present site in 1962. The Onehunga branch line closed in January 1973. It was in use subsequently for annual excursions till 2005, then condemned as unsafe.
It has been moved to 38 Alfred Street, superbly restored and occupied by the Railway Enthusiasts Society, which has an excellent web site at www.railfan.org.nz.
It is a scheduled Building (designation H10, No 14), under the 2002 Auckland City District Plan and now adjoins land set aside as a future rail corridor (designation H10 G08 05), between Onehunga and Avondale.
