Governance

Civic Trust Auckland is an incorporated (1968), non profit public interest group.

A brief history of Civic Trust Auckland indicates the nature of works undertaken by the Trust, some of which are ongoing.

Civic Trust Auckland has a formal constitution and is governed in accordance with its rules by a board, with a chairman and secretary, confirmed or appointed at an annual general meeting, held in October/November each year. Accounts are independently audited.

Members are encouraged to put themselves forward (to any board member) for possible future board membership, or in order to assist the board by becoming the member of a specialist sub-committee. See board for current board membership. See the sub-committees section for details of sub-committees and their work.

In addition to ongoing activities, new works are undertaken, which arise from suggestions made to, or by, board members and aired at their monthly meetings. Suggestions from members to their board are encouraged.

The decision to go ahead with any particular project will depend on the urgency of the matter, people power available and, some other criteria, such as perceived public good. Many board members are in full time work and volunteers are keenly sought in areas where specialist expertise would be helpful, for example in the disciplines of architecture, archeology, geology, law, Maori language and heritage, planning, printing, publication, transportation and many others.

Activities is an important part of the web site, where member and public participation is welcome.

From mid to late 2006 the board has been meeting in the premises of Kinder House, in Parnell. This is a particularly attractive venue.

Civic Trust Auckland was one of the parties instrumental in getting this historic building transferred into public ownership (to Auckland City Council) in the 1970's.

A plaque commemorating Margaret Newman and her personal efforts, which were so effective in this achievement, is located within the grounds.
