Board
The board is elected into office at the time of the AGM.
The 2011 AGM was held at Kinder House, cnr Ayr St and Parnell Road, on 3pm Saturday 5 November. Peter Macky gave
a well-received talk on the restoration of a 19th-century train station built for Kaiser Wilhelm II in Brandenburg, Germany.

ALLAN MATSON (PRESIDENT) B.Com, B.Arch. Heritage consultant, passionate in his efforts to save Auckland's
heritage buildings from demolition and/or inappropriate development; elected member of the NZ Historic Places Trust
Board, has a particular interest in promoting consistent assessment of regional and national measurement of
heritage significance; has a decade of merchant banking experience; is an elected member of Auckland CBD business
organisation, Heart of the City; has long promoted the equitable sharing of the burden of heritage protection
through appropriate incentives.

AUDREY VAN RYN (VICE PRESIDENT & SECRETARY) BA (English), Dip Tchg. Technical writer. Member of CBD Residents'
Advisory Group, editor of RAG e-newsletter, interested in CBD issues including smokefree public open spaces and car-free
spaces; in 2009 created the Auckland Peace Heritage Walk on behalf of the United Nations Association of NZ; interested in
environmental issues, especially trees; former secretary of Auckland Bicycle Assn.

MUNROE GRAHAM (IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT) Dip Urb Val, ANZIV, SPINZ, AREINZ. Member since early 1970's.
Chair Volcanic features Protection Sub-committee, member Transport Sub-committee. Interested in architectural
history, Auckland and general history (Maori and European) nationally and throughout the region, vehicle
preservation, tramways and railways. Volcano spotter and protector. Member of the Vintage Car and New Zealand
Railway and Locomotive Society.

JAMES MASON QSO. BA, LLB. Barrister. Former lecturer in Valuation Law. Charitable Trusts include:
NZ Maritime Trust to preserve ferries SS Toroa and SS Ngoiro; Chair of 1886 Fort Victoria Trust; 1912 Victoria
Theatre Trust, Rangitoto Island Trust. Trustee of the Year Award from Trustees Association. Interested in
general heritage in Auckland, North Shore and Hauraki Gulf; Sir John Logan Campbell Kindergarten.

PETER MACKY Peter was voted on to the Board of Civic Trust Auckland in 2009 and has already shown a
keen and active interest in many aspects of board affairs. He has been a Life member of the Historic Places
Trust for over 30 years and has always taken a strong interest in the activities of the Historic Places
Trust and heritage in general.
Qualified; LLB - Auckland University 1977, LLM - New York University 1991, MCL - Auckland University - 2008,
Peter's professional and general interests are mainly in the law and rugby league. He has been staff
solicitor, then partner in various law practices (currently a consultant with Macky Roberton), Chairman
of the Ponsonby Rugby League Club for 30 years where he is a life member, also Chairman or Deputy Chairman
of the Auckland Rugby League and a past Chairman of Auckland Warriors Limited.
His legal affiliations are Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and Member of the
New York State Bar, New York, USA. He is a Member of the Northern Club.

JULIAN MITCHELL Registered Architect B.Arch ANZIA. Partner at Mitchell and Stout Architects Ltd.
Lives in Belmont with partner and two young children. Interested in making Auckland a better place by
preserving the best buildings, streets and laneways, while improving the general urban fabric with
well-considered new building and fine-grained planning; would like to see more tree-lined streets and
better provision for bicycles and pedestrians, along with a master plan for the central city.

GARY RUSSELL JP, MSc, MPhil, BEd. Active in environment and heritage protection
for 35 years, completed heritage site economic feasibility studies for the European Union
Intercultural programmes, having developed the 'utiles' system of economic valuation of heritage
and cultural sites, projects on Social and Cultural Capital Asset Impact Assessments, Environment
Impact (Effect) Assessments and Safety & Security Assessment of heritage destinations; a director
of World History Travel; chaired the Auckland Branch of the NZ Historic Places Trust, was an
elected Northern Region NZHPT rep; was a NZ Federation of Historic Societies member; past
national council member of the United Nations Association of NZ; Friends of the Earth, Northland;
and the Association of Low Impact Technology and Energy; elected to Waitakere City Council; sat
on the Northland Regional Economic Development Council, Community Employment Investigation Scheme;
Hauraki Gulf Forum; Tourism Auckland; Electoral College of MOTAT; Auckland War Memorial Museum,
currently writing a book on the social & cultural impacts of the Italian campaign on the WWII NZ,
2nd New Zealand Expedition Force service personnel.

HELEN GEARY BA (Education), Dip Tchg. Trained as a teacher, Helen has a working history mainly in
adult education, along with positions in health charities, and community involvement in local
organisations. A Mt Eden resident for nearly 30 years, she has been active in heritage and planning
issues in the area. Most notably, they were securing a new park for Mt Eden, the Balmoral Heights
Reserve, and getting modification to the Eden Quarter development at Valley Rd, where a heritage
bank building was demolished. Her most recent heritage involvement was in securing the Category B
Auckland City Council listing for Building 5 at the Greenlane Hospital site, with support from the
then Auckland Regional Council, Greenlane staff and Allan Matson. Helen is keen to profile heritage
issues and work to get public support for more proactive heritage regulations in Auckland.

MICHAEL STEVENS. He is interested in many aspects of heritage, particularly that involving Freemans Bay, Ponsonby and other inner Auckland suburbs. He is interested in local body and regional organization.
NICK ROBINSON, MLI, MI Hort, MA (landscape architecture), chartered landscape architect in private practice, specialist in sustainable landscape architecture and landscape planning. Nick enjoys a special interest in landscape and garden heritage across the world. He Lectures part-time in landscape architecture at the University of Auckland CCE and UNITEC, formerly at Lincoln University, Canterbury.
JANET BEGG activist in environmental protection with values party, Remuera community committee, friends of the Christchurch botanic Gardens Inc, Golf Links Residents Association Inc, Christchurch, Christchurch Civic trust Inc. A current and ongoing passion is to help fight for the protection of Albert Park land. Other priorities are protection for worldwide water and promoting, improving and protecting public transport, especially buses.
DAVE PEARSON
B.Arch, ANZIA. Principal of Dave Pearson and Associates Ltd. Devonport, specialists in Heritage Conservation. At present preparing Conservation and Heritage plans for 23 Alten Road. Secretary of the Remuera Railway Station Preservation Trust, member of the 1886 Fort Victoria Trust. 2002 winner of New Zealand Institute of architect's heritage award for his work towards the restoration of the 1877 waterworks building at MOTAT.
